DR. HOWARD THURMAN

At the time of his death in 1981, Howard Thurman was Dean Emeritus of Marsh Chapel, Boston University. He also held various theological roles at Howard University and Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. He founded the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, the first interracial, interdenominational church in the U.S.

Poet, mystic, philosopher and theologian, Dr. Thurman authored more than twenty books. and served as spiritual advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

ABOUT US

The mission of the Howard Thurman Center is to empower persons of all races and ages to live their lives to the fullest as children of the living God by developing strong bodies, minds, and spirits and by building the Beloved Community that respects the dignity of all of God's creation.

The Howard Thurman Center is developing programs that will physically, mentally, and spiritually empower persons of all ages. it will also offer sacred space for cross-generational, cross-racial dialogue and community engagement work.

The Rev. Dr. Kwasi Thornell serves as its founding Executive Director.

The Colin Powell Black Student Scholarship Fund

The Colin Powell Black Student Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships for those students who wish to attend Episcopal Schools within the Diocese of Southeast Florida. A sub-committee of the Thurman Center will receive applications for scholarships and will determine the recipients. Donations to the scholarship fund are separate from donations to the Center.
